Midoriya
About This Spot
Stepping into Midoriya on N 9th Street feels like uncovering a quiet slice of Japan nestled in the heart of Brooklyn. It’s less a sprawling supermarket and more an intimate neighborhood nook where the pace slows just enough to savor a moment of discovery. The space is small but thoughtfully curated; shelves gently hum with stories of ingredients and snacks that speak of everyday life far beyond American shores.
There’s a warmth in the way this Japanese grocery store welcomes visitors — a mix of familiarity and gentle surprise. Alongside the dependable staples, you might find a curious array of treats that aren’t easily found elsewhere, inviting quiet exploration and the kind of impulse pick-up that feels like a personal find. The feeling is less about rushing through a list, and more about unfolding a tiny adventure in eating and cooking.
Midoriya resonates as a distinctly local spot, run by people who know their shelves intimately and are happy to share their knowledge. The sense of genuine care is palpable — whether you’re seeking out a specific ingredient for a home recipe or simply looking to grab a simple onigiri for a post-walk treat. You’re likely to leave with something unexpected, carried by little moments of connection and guidance that turn a routine grocery run into a quiet joy.
For anyone drawn to the precise comforts and everyday curiosities of Japanese cuisine, Midoriya is a thoughtful companion. Here, the mood is calm but engaging, a gentle reminder that discovery often lives in the smallest places and in the stories they carry.

Love this place. I’ve been looking for a good local Japanese store since I moved here and this is the one. I found everything I needed and picked up some onigiri as a lil treat post-shopping trip. Strongly recommend for sure.

Tiny market with tons of Japanese convenience store must haves. Boss Coffee, mango drinks, hot coffee case in the front, and fresh onigiri. Lots of chips too!

My favourite Japanese grocer in the area. If you cook Japanese food they have everything you need including good brands, not just Asian snacks. It’s actually Japanese owned and run, and they are super nice. Importantly prices are also much more reasonable than other stores. Highly recommend!!

The shopkeeper gave me some absolutely excellent suggestions for snacks. I love browsing and trying random things but their insight led me to items I would not have tried otherwise. Specifically the Seaweed & Salt flavored potato chips. Highly recommend.

I <3 this place. Everyone is extremely kind and friendly. The store is very clean and well stocked on Japanese items and the prices are fair and oftentimes cheaper than other stores in the neighborhood. This is a hidden local gem I always shout out to my friends

They pack a lot in this shop and the customer service is the best I’ve had in NYC in a Japanese grocery store. They give excellent recommendations for cooking. A true gem!

My youngest daughter loves coming here. And so we came to shop for goodies. Japanese treats are always just made right. Also their noodles are so good and yummy.
